    MAKE Garden Cafe Project

MAKE Garden Café: Merging Agriculture, Kitchens and Employment for Community Integration, Cultural Awareness and Economic Self-Sufficiency

A partnership between St. Luke’s Episcopal Church, the International Rescue Committee (IRC) and the North Park Community

We're delighted to announce a collaboration between St. Luke's North Park and the International Rescue Committee, a trusted partner in refugee resettlement in San Diego and around the globe.  Beginning this April, and launching in earnest this fall, a refugee job training program will transform St. Luke's vacant lot into a productive and beautiful community space for at least the next three years.

The MAKE Garden Café will activate the corner lot of 30th and Gunn with the creation of a new organic urban farm and outdoor garden café through IRC’s Youth FarmWorks and Project CHOP job training programs for low-income youth and refugee women. The Garden Café will serve handcrafted teas, coffees, baked goods and salads prepared by refugee women employed in Project CHOP and operating out of St. Luke’s renovated commercial kitchen. Youth FarmWorks-grown vegetables will be sold at the North Park Farmers’ Market and utilized in Project CHOP products. The Garden Café will also feature a cultural arts gallery with rotating visual arts displays (sculptures, murals, woven arts) and musical performances representing the many refugee and immigrant cultures in nearby City Heights. We are in the fundraising and planning stages and welcome your support and ideas in helping to make this a reality! If you'd like to make a donation, please click here.

Please fill out the form below so we can stay in touch with you as this project develops.   We'd also love to sit down with you and hear your ideas -- be in touch with Colin at colin@stlukesnorthpark.org.
